100% of proceeds from these bracelets will be donated to the Ontario Native Women’s Association and to Indigenous youth in transition. Inter generational trauma is the legacy of Canada’s residential school policy. I’ve had many opportunities to listen to survivors and to the children of those survivors. Friends, family, community members.
To hear people speak about never being hugged or held or nurtured as little children in the schools, and the sadness and regret they felt when they became parents and didn’t know how to express these forms of affection to their own children. On top of losing language, culture, connection to land and traditional knowledge - something that seems so simple and small has had a devastating impact on families.
I choose to support Indigenous communities by focusing on the nurturing of healthy families and youth. Elements of the residential school system live on in the over representation of Indigenous youth in the foster care system. Many remote communities still have to fly their children to boarding schools. Indigenous families continue to be separated and communities fractured.
I hope you will join me in donating to valuable organizations such as the ONWA and Native Women’s Association of Canada directly or by showing your support through the purchase of one these bracelets.
